Our Commitment
At WHCA We recognize that healthcare systems have not always been safe, respectful, or equitable for Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the historical and ongoing harms caused by colonization, systemic racism, and exclusion, and we accept our responsibility to contribute to healing, reconciliation, and meaningful change.
Guided by Indigenous voices, knowledge, and partnerships, WHCA commits to advancing Truth and Reconciliation in tangible, accountable, and enduring ways. Our commitments include:
Embedding culturally safe and trauma-informed approaches throughout the care and services we provide.
Building understanding and capability across our Boards, leadership, physicians, staff, and volunteers through ongoing education, reflection, and learning.
Listening to and strengthening relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and partners with respect, humility, and openness.
Integrating reconciliation into our governance, policies, organizational priorities, resource decisions, and long-term planning so that our commitments are embedded, measurable, and sustained.
Supporting dignity, healing, equity, and self-determination for Indigenous Peoples.
Being transparent about our progress, acknowledging where we must improve, and holding ourselves accountable for meaningful action
We understand that reconciliation is not a single action or destination. It is a continuous journey that requires consistent action, transparency, accountability, and trust. WHCA is committed to walking this path with humility, courage, respect, and purpose, while honouring the land, the treaties, and the Indigenous Peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.
